Woman fights for life after fatal crash

A MAN has been killed and his wife critically injured in a horror crash in Central West New South Wales.

Police said the couple was travelling in a car along the Newell Highway near Back Creek when their vehicle collided with a truck roughly 18km from West Wyalong just before 7pm on Friday.

Sadly, the 54-year-old man who was driving the car sustained life-threatening injuries and died at the scene.

His 52-year-old wife was rushed by ambulance to West Wyalong Hospital from where she was later airlifted to the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in a critical condition.

The truck driver escaped uninjured but was taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Officers from Murrumbidgee Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Newell Highway was closed in both directions for several hours while the scene was examined.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
