Woman hands herself in after toddler killed in Melbourne hit-and-run

A 73-year-old woman has handed herself into police after a three-year-old boy was hit and killed by a car outside a childcare centre in Melbourne.

Emergency services rushed to McIntyre Road in Sunshine North around 6.30pm on Thursday, following reports of a hit and run involving a toddler.

The three-year-old suffered critical injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he sadly died a short time later.

Police were told the youngster had been struck by a red sedan, which failed to stop at the scene.

Following a public appeal for information, the 73-year-old woman handed herself into police this morning, where she was arrested.

“Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will interview her later today,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

The red sedan allegedly involved in the collision has been seized and will be forensically tested.

Investigations continue.
