Woman hit and killed by stolen car in dramatic hit-run crash

A MAN in a stolen Mercedes has allegedly mowed down and killed a woman on a pushbike and rammed several vehicles in Melbourne.

Police said the stolen sedan collided with a cyclist and smashed into a vehicle on Chapel Street, near Grover Street, in South Yarra about 10am on Sunday.

The force of the impact was so strong, the bicycle was propelled into the side of a black SUV, with its front wheel becoming lodged in the driver’s side window.

Sadly, the woman riding the pushbike sustained life-threatening injuries and could not be saved. Police have confirmed she died at the scene.

Two other unoccupied cars that were parked on the street were also damaged in the high-impact collision and the driver fled the scene on foot, police said.

Detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Unit are on still the scene, trying to work out exactly what happened.

In a statement, a Victoria Police spokesperson said the circumstances surrounding the incident were still being investigated.

They are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or has information regarding the whereabouts of the Mercedes driver, to come forward.

Traffic is blocked on Chapel Street between Ellis Street and Malvern Road and diversions are in place while emergency services respond.

Anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
