Woman hospitalised after being ‘crushed’ by falling palm tree in Queensland

UPDATE 3:44PM | A WOMAN is in a serious condition in hospital after being ‘crushed’ by a palm tree at Cairns.

Senior Operational Supervisor Neal Noble from the Queensland Ambulance Service said the woman was standing outside a block of units, waiting for a lift when the tree suddenly snapped at the base and fell on her.

Mr Noble said the “very large” tree was brought down in strong winds and “crushed the woman quite severely”.


“When paramedics arrived, they found that the tree was laying across her chest,” Mr Noble said.

“She [sustained] some head injuries, some chest injuries, and some limb injuries as well.

“It’s a completely freak accident.”

Mr Noble said the woman was rushed to Cairns Hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

FIRST: A WOMAN has been taken to hospital after being hit in the head by a falling palm tree in north Queensland.

The incident occurred outside a house in the Cairns suburb of Freshwater just before 2pm.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 50s, was treated by paramedics at the scene.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson told myGC the woman had sustained a head injury and was transported to hospital in a “stable condition”.

Firefighters and police also attended the scene.
