UPDATE: Charges laid after woman killed in horror crash in NSW
A man is facing possible jail time after being accused of running a red light and killing a female passenger, near Newcastle.
The 31-year-old was behind the wheel of a Ford Territory on Monday morning (July 24), when he allegedly ignored the traffic signal at the corner of Industrial Drive and Tourle Street in Mayfield.
His SUV collided with a Holden Astra, being driven by a 66-year-old man, who suffered non-life threatening injuries.
A 65-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, died at the scene.
The 31-year-old man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
He underwent mandatory blood and urine testing and Police from the Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation.
On Saturday he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death; cause bodily harm by misconduct; negligent driving occasioning death; negligent driving; and proceed through red traffic light.
He was conditionally bailed to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 24 August.
