A woman has survived a terrifying attack in her own home, after neighbours responded to her screams for help.
The 43-year-old was alone in her property on Little Keen Street in Lismore, west of Tweed Heads, when she woke to find an unknown man inside, around 4am on Saturday.
He threatened her with a knife and she tried to fight him off.

However, she was overpowered by the man who went on to sexually assault her.
He then demanded money and during a further struggle, the woman was hit on the head with an unknown object.
Her screams alerted neighbours who came to help, but the man ran off.
Police arrived shortly after and searched the area, but were unable to find the man.
He is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, aged in his late teens/early 20s, with black curly hair, and green eyes.
The woman was treated by paramedics for facial injuries and lacerations to her hands, arms, and back before being taken to Lismore Base Hospital for further treatment.
