Woman viciously bashed with metal pipe, left to die by estranged husband

A MAN who brutally attacked his estranged wife with a metal pipe, leaving her to die, has been arrested.

Norm Rutherford, 56, reportedly waited for his former partner, Cathryn, 54, to leave work at Carah’s Cakes and Pies in Bathurst on Thursday night when he viciously bashed her with a metal pipe, leaving her to die in the drivers seat of her car.

Five hours after the brutal assault, a passer-by noticed the woman lying unconscious in her car and phoned police around 10.45pm.

Mrs Rutherford was airlifted to Westmead Hospital where she remains in a stable but critical condition with serious head injuries.

Mr Rutherford was arrested the following night and charged with attempted murder, stalking and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It’s believed the horrifying act of domestic violence was sparked over a dispute of the couple’s property.
