World Poker Tour to return to The Star Gold Coast

The World Poker Tour® (WPT) is set to return to The Star Gold Coast with three major tournaments across 2020 and 2021.

The Star announced a major two-year partnership with WPT overnight, which will see the first WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast Festival run 10 events over 11 days in April 2020 and 2021, while the WPT Australia Festival returns to the property in September this year.

It follows the success of Australia’s first ever WPT Festival, held at The Star in September last year, which saw a record-breaking poker prize pool for Queensland at the time swell to more than $3.1 million and more than 3000 participants entering across the tournament.

To accommodate the festival, The Star’s new poker zone will increase capacity from 14 to 25 poker tables, and will be equipped with the latest in poker technology including bespoke IT and registration systems that allows players to register for cash games via SMS.

Chief Operating Officer Jess Mellor said the new tournaments would see The Star Poker Gold Coast facility floor plan expand to meet demand.

“Australia is one of the top nations for poker in the world, and its popularity continues to grow in Queensland,” she said.

“Last year’s event showed the poker world that The Star Gold Coast is a must-visit poker destination and we look forward to showcasing our property to more players from around the globe.”

The first WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast event will run at The Star Gold Coast from April 24 to May 4, 2020 with buy-ins from $1100. WPT Australia Festival, incorporating WPT DeepStacks Australia and the WPT Australia Main Event will run from September 24 to October 2, 2020. The Star will then play host to the WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast Festival from April 23 to May 3, 2021.
