WATCH: Year of the Tiger celebrations roar into Chinatown this weekend

Colourful festivities will take over Chinatown in Southport this Saturday, with Lunar New Year celebrations returning to the city for the first time in two years.

Gold Coasters can enjoy a foodie fiesta, lion dancers, outdoor movie screening and spectacular fireworks finale to welcome in the Year of the Tiger.

Acting Mayor Donna Gates told myGC the free, family-friendly Lunar New Year celebraitons will kick off at 4pm.

“Due to Covid-19, we haven’t been able to host our usual Lunar New Year festivities over the last two years,” she said.

“What a wonderful occasion for our community to celebrate what is to come in the Year of the Tiger, as we begin to return to normal life.

“Enjoy the best mini meals on offer in Southport with our $5 food safari and enjoy the atmosphere of our very own Chinatown,” she said.

The Food Safari will continue until Saturday 12 February with a selection of $5 delicacies available at more than 20 food vendors in Chinatown.
