Young girl, man charged over Gold Coast barber shop blaze

A man and young girl have been charged over a ferocious fire which gutted a popular Gold Coast barber shop and caused significant damage to a number of other businesses at a busy Southport shopping complex last month.

The blaze broke out at the barber shop on Meron Street around 1.30am on June 28, before quickly spreading to the roof cavity of the building.

The inferno caused extensive damage to the barber, while at least three adjoining businesses suffered fire, smoke and water damage.

The blaze was quickly deemed suspicious with fire investigators working to determine the cause of the fire.

Following ongoing investigations, a 43-year-old Helensvale man was today charged with one count of arson and one count of attempted fraud.

A 15-year-old Helensvale girl has also been charged with one count of arson.

The man is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court today.
