Young rugby player arrested for punching ref in NSW football grand final
A YOUNG rugby player has been arrested after allegedly punching a referee at a football grand final in NSW.
Police said the 18-year-old allegedly assaulted the ref during the under 19s rugby union match at Newcastle West around 5.45pm on Saturday.
The 19-year-old referee sustained minor facial injuries after he was allegedly struck in the jaw.
Police were called and, following investigations, attended a home at Rutherford around 10pm last night where they arrested the 18-year-old player.
He was taken to Maitland Police Station where he spent the night assisting police with their inquiries.
It is not known if any charges have been laid.
