Youth group leader accused of repeatedly raping 15-year-old girl

THE leader of a youth group near Newcastle has been charged over the alleged repeated rape and sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl.

Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad launched an investigation into the man after becoming aware of the allegations last month.

It’s alleged the man sexually touched, assaulted and raped the teenage girl on several occasions in April and May.

Following an extensive investigation, detectives arrested the 22-year-old in Beresfield on Friday morning.

The youth group leader was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with seven counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with a child under 16, and two counts of intentionally sexually touching a child under 16.

Following his arrest, detectives executed a search warrant at the man’s home near Belmont and seized two vehicles.

The 22-year-old was remanded in custody overnight and due to appear in Newcastle Bail Court yesterday.

Police said the man was stood down from his role as youth group leader during the investigation.
